Aldi revamp under way

WORK has started on the revamp of Cockermouth’s Aldi supermarket and car park.
The supermarket chain bought the Derwent Filling Station on Low Road to extend its existing store and improve its car park in February 2007, but only started work two weeks ago on the car park. The store will be extended in the new year.
Aldi said it hoped the site would be ready by next summer.
The filling station land will be used to replace some current car parking spaces that will be lost as a result of the store extension.
Jobs will be created as a result of the expansion, but an Aldi spokesman could not confirm how many.
Aldi earlier withdrew and re-submitted its planning application because a site investigation was needed.
The extension will see the store increase from 760 square metres to 940, and separate customer and service vehicle access points will be created.
Pedestrian access and pathways round the car park will also be improved.
