Almost £500k for flood appeal

IF you’ve been affected by the flooding and need a helping hand, get in touch with the Cumbria Flood Recovery Fund 2009.

The appeal, organised by the Cumbria Foundation, has now raised almost £500,00 from businesses and individuals.

Help is available for individuals or families whose homes suffered significant structural damage or flooding and employees, who have lost work or income because of storms or floods.

The fund can provide support for cleaning up; emergency repairs; clothing; food and drink; heating and heating equipment; child care equipment; and basic furniture or other essential items.

Priority will be given to households with people over 70, children under five, people with physical or learning disabilities or mental health needs (eg receiving Disability Living Allowance, Incapacity Benefit or Attendance Allowance) and those on low incomes.

The appeal will not normally fund people who are fully insured; vehicles or businesses, which should approach BusinessLink for help.

The maximum grant will normally be £500 (£1,000 in exceptional circumstances).

Emergency grants are also available for voluntary and community groups to relieve hardship caused directly or indirectly by this month’s storms and flooding.

Money will be available for voluntary and community groups who are providing immediate relief to people who have been affected by the storms and floods; will be providing longer term community rebuilding projects; have experienced significant structural and or flood damage.

Grants can be used to support relief services; shelter; food; clothing and the clean up; additional support services, such as information and advice, counselling or care services (eg day care or respite); or longer term projects of community rebuilding.

Priority will be given to voluntary and community groups providing support to one or more of the following groups of people – older adults; families with young children; people with physical or learning disabilities; people with mental health needs; people on low incomes; and to projects showing evidence of collaboration with other service providers; or maximising the use of volunteers.

The appeal would not normally fund flooded voluntary and community groups who are fully insured; businesses; any non-charitable activity, eg political; fundraising events; substitution for statutory funding.

Maximum grants will normally be £5,000 (£10,000 in exceptional circumstances).

Have your say

It is almost 4 weeks since we were flooded and have yet to date received very little help down here in Ulverston. What do we have to do to get some help?? Please help us out???

I agree with the comments of William Wood, I am also disgusted by the poor publicity for the appeal, which has been very localized. If it had happened "down south", you can bet your life it would have been plastered all over the national press.
