Police‘s softly-softly approach to kids’ football

POLICE in Carlisle are taking a softly-softly approach to kids playing football in the street – quite literally.
They recruited Carlisle United star Cleveland Taylor to hand out soft balls to youngsters at the city’s Robert Ferguson school on Thursday. The thinking behind the scheme is that soft balls cause less noise and damage to property when being kicked around than old-style footballs.
PC Pete Forster first got involved in the swap scheme a year ago as a response to the number of calls received about incidents on his Currock beat.
He said: “There were about 115 in a year just related to children playing football in the street.
“That is a lot for a small area and they are related to noise and damage to fences, cars and windows. The youngsters are just playing in the streets near their homes so these soft balls offer the perfect solution.”
